Production Companies

Production companies can either be large studios like Universal Pictures, or they can be independent companies.
Independent Companies/ Producers need to persuade banks/ investment companies or wealthy individuals to invest in their films, whereas the big studios already have a large budget to make films.

The film is then handed over to the distributor.

Large Studios :

·         Universal pictures

·         Dream works

·         BBC

·         Working title films

·         Columbia

·         Warner Bros

·         Pixar

·         Paramount

·         PolyGram

                                                             ·         20th Century Fox

Independent Producers- Individuals or a small group of producers for example:

·         Warp Pictures

·         Coffee Films

·         Caravan Film

·         Fractured Films

·         Many Rivets Films

Five major production companies dominate the UK film industry: Universal, Warner Bros, Buena Vista, 20th Century Fox and Sony.
They also control distribution and what cinemas their films can be shown in.

Quick Facts

1.      9/10 Films seen in the cinema are viewed as a result of a large production company.

2.      Exhibitors (cinemas) prioritise Hollywood Films over others for profit.
So even if a small UK independent company manages to get its product into cinemas it is usually competing for attention with one or more Hollywood Films.
